PR 20 - Vereda do Jardim do Mar

Located on the west side of the island of Madeira, Vereda do Jardim do Mar is a 1.9 km trail which takes about 1:30 hours and connects the parish of Prazeres to Jardim do Mar. The level difference of approximately 500 metres that characterises the trail invites you to take a leisurely walk, with time to enjoy the ocean views.

Starting at an altitude of 530 metres, in the parish of Prazeres, Vereda do Jardim do Mar, of easy difficulty, was one of the few accesses to the coast that locals had in the past. The mild climate and abundance of water meant that, from early on, this hillside was used for agriculture, practised meticulously on terraces supported by stone walls.

Vereda do Jardim do Mar was designed among these agricultural fields, which mark the surroundings of the trail. Before finishing the trail, be sure to visit the recently restored Water Mill, which was once used to grind the cereals grown in this parish and surrounding areas. At the end of Vereda do Jardim do Mar, take in the natural landscapes of Jardim do Mar, marked by the presence of the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other.
