The route along Vereda do Pico Fernandes begins at the regional road (ER 209), on the Paul da Serra plateau, and follows an old footpath to PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, then continues along it to the 25 Fontes lagoon.
Along the route through Vereda do Pico Fernandes, the predominance of high-altitude heath is notable. However, the vegetation changes as you descend in altitude and you come across different species of trees, such as the lily-of-the-valley-tree, the til and the laurel. The magnificent panoramic view from Pico Fernandes or Rabaçal is a highlight of this beautiful route. On days with good visibility, you might be surprised by a 360º view of Paul da Serra.
When arriving at 25 Fontes, don't miss the excellent example of a suspended aquifer, whose abundance and water permanence was decisive in the construction of the Madeiran levadas. Due to its exceptional scientific value, this site of geological interest is classified as geosite C01 - 25 Fontes.
Once you've recharged your batteries, you can take the route back to the starting point or, alternatively, you can follow PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes which will take you, among other destinations, to Casa do Rabaçal.
